My name is Dawn Smith and I will be your child's Texas History teacher this year at Moorhead. I am looking forward to an exciting year of exploring the great history of our state with your child. My goal is to provide all my students with an educationally challenging, yet fun experience in my classroom.
This is my ninth year teaching at Moorhead Jr. High. I am a long-time resident of Grangerland and grew up out in this general area. Four of my children are Caney Creek graduates. Please know that I am very committed and eager to serve you and your child. I believe that an open parent-teacher relationship is the key to student achievement. Throughout the year I will be contacting you through notes, telephone calls, email, progress reports and parent/teacher conferences. I hope that you will contact me with any questions or concerns that you should have. The easiest way to reach me is by email, which I check several times during the day while at school. My email address is [email protected]. In the past I have found one of the biggest struggles for our incoming 7th graders is the lack of a foundation in history. It is one of those subjects in elementary and intermediate that is not given a lot of attention or importance. Our job in 7th grade besides teaching the content, is to teach students that history is a core subject, the grades do count and they will take a STAAR test over it in 8th grade. I am a very proud 6th generation Texan whose Great-Great-Great Grandfather purchased land here in Montgomery County from Stephen F Austin and who fought in the Texas Revolution in 1836. Texas History has one of the richest histories in our nation. We have been lead by six flags. We have seen dinosaurs, conquistadors, filibusters, heroes, and villains. We will examine government and geography. Your child will hear stuff they already know and will also learn a lot of new things. The Texas story has so many different topics and our story is what binds us together as TEXIANS. Each student will need a composition book, 8 glue sticks, map pencils and 2 boxes of tissues. We cover a lot of material in class and need supplies on hand to use in our lessons. Again, feel free to contact me, at any time, and I want to thank you in advance for allowing me to have your child in my class. Dawn Smith 7th grade Texas History/MJHS [email protected] 936-709-2400 |
